About

I love learning and teaching regenerative design practices and permaculture. I am a permaculture activist, designer, educator, and founder of the Urban Permaculture Guild in Oakland. I facilitate workshops on sustainabilty and permaculture as well as give public presentations about eco-social design, city repair, and the power of placemaking. I have trained in Ecovillage Design with the Findhorn Foundation of Scotland, Natural Building with Kleiwerks International, and Permaculture Design with the Occidental Arts and Ecology Center, I also earned an MA in Creative Arts from San Francisco State University. Presently I serve on the boards of two Bay Area nonprofit organizations devoted to peace, justice, and sustainablity, the NorCal Chapter of Architects, Designers, Planners for Social Responsibility (ADPSR) in Berkeley and Bay Localize in Oakland. In December 2006 I became one of a 1,000 Climate Project trainees, empowered to present a version of Al Gore's Inconvienent Truth slide presentation. I have enjoyed helping start up the Green City Gallery in Berkeley and am teaching Ecovillage Design in New Mexico and Permaculture at the San Francisco Botanical Garden, Solar Living Institute in Hopland and the Esalen Institute in Big Sur. My latest endeavor is leading up the new Regenerative Urban Design Institute at San Francisco State's College of Extended Learning. I look forward to bringing Urban Permaculture to academia and a larger more culturally and economically diverse audience. I love living in Oakland and am devoted to localization, believing it to be a key strategy towards sustainability and thriveability.

"Be as quick to defend the rights of a stranger as you would a member of your own family.  It's the rights you're defending, not the person.

Be generous to the poor, whether you know them or not.  It's mercy you're expressing, not personal affection.

Forgive those who have wronged you, not because they deserve it, but because forgiveness is on the side of the saints, while grudges and vengeance bring the world one step closer to destruction.

Take sides constantly with what is highest, noblest and good.  Then see what happens."

hi Katherine

I have been working on a media cooperative project www.Permaculture.TV - which has been running for a month now and is getting a great reception

am interested in working on organising a US based fund for original permaculture media

I especially like the work of Livable Streets and Street Films in NYC

and have been thinking of a similar grassroots approach
