Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Fund Development Board is promoting demand-driven community based approach in water supply and sanitation sector in Nepal by mobilizing non-governmental and private sector organizations in assisting communities to implement water supply and sanitation schemes.



The objectives of the program being undertaken by the board were established during its 1st phase as following:



Delivery of sustainable health and hygiene services through improvement in water supply and sanitation;



Improving incomes of women through time saving as water is brought closer to their dwellings; and



Improve the capabilities of sector institution both government and non-government.



Some of the basic strategies to achieve its objectives are as follows:



Transfer of skills, knowledge and technology to empower user communities;



Increased community participation and decisions at all level of project cycle;



Community cost sharing;



Greater transparency among all stakeholders;



Maximization of women involvement;



Thrust of gender equity;



Integration of various software interventions (NFE, income generation, women development, and most importantly hygiene and sanitation activities);



Maximum emphasize on self-retaining of community managed operation and maintenance system for the long-term sustainability, and



Mobilization of national and local private firms, NGOs and CBOs in service delivery.
