Job Description – Assistant Maintenance Manager
The Chisholme Institute is an Educational Charity registered in Scotland which has run a residential adult study and retreat centre in the Scottish Borders for the last 30 years. The focus of its work is an exploration of a Universal Spiritual Perspective. The school is fully accredited by the British Accreditation Council for Independent Further and Higher Education.
The position of Maintenance Manager is central to the physical operation of the School. The present Maintenance Manager is Jeff Flowers who has a background in engineering, has worked at the school for over 10 years and is in need of an assistant.
The job is varied and interesting. It involves the maintenance and service of the various equipment and systems , the induction and supervision of visitors and students and helping to research and develop sustainable energy. For example, a new 160 Kilowatt bio-mass boiler has recently been installed as part of the school’s self sufficiency and sustainable energy programme. The introduction of this system is being supervised by Jeff Flowers.
You would need to be flexible, willing to work with different kinds of people and enjoy being part of a team. Some knowledge of engineering or building maintenance would be desirable, but is not essential. The main qualifications for working at the school are a willingness to learn and an open mind.
The School is located in a beautiful and remote part of the Scottish Borders in a 200 acre Estate nine miles from the nearest small town. This is a Voluntary position and you would be offered free board and lodging, training on the job and, if you wish, the possibility to participate in the education programme of the school at whatever level would interest you.
The school is not connected to the National Grid and has its own water supply. A priority for the school is to develop sustainable energy systems. The next project will be to investigate Wind turbines and Solar Power, to reduce the school’s dependence on the diesel generator. Interest and expertise in these areas would be particularly welcome.
A minimum commitment of 3 months would be required.
