WiserEarth's Online Community Manager position
:

 

WiserEarth seeks an full time online community manager to join our WiserEarth team based in Sausalito, California. WiserEarth is a community networking forum for civil society, the private sector, and government to collaborate, define, address, and solve social and environmental problems.

 

Since its launch in May of 2007, WiserEarth has developed a lively user base with a growing volunteer "editor" community. We are seeking a community manager to help support the editors community, monitor content, encourage discussion and activity on the site, and help to expand WiserEarth to an international audience.

About This Position:

The WiserEarth community is largely focused around WiserEarth groups, which is a unique space where existing intiatives of WiserEarth users can be mobilized or where new efforts can take shape. This is a valuable resource for the environmental and social justice community and active management is essential for nurturing and growing the community. We are redesigning our group functionality to be even more user friendly, so that relationship-building and networking can occur with even more ease.

Activities for the Online Community Manager include but are not limited to:

  • Editor Community Management: Collaborating with existing editor community to determine qualifications and selection criteria for Wiserearth's editors, co-develop specific site functionality relevant to this user group, and period surveys and in person interviews.
  • New user welcome and orientation: Set-up system to engage new users and make them productive members of the WiserEarth community
  • Forum and group facilitation: Encourage user discussions, help users make connections across site, create new discussion forums and topics that respond to the interests of users, participate and encourage activity in key WiserEarth groups, assist users to start new groups etc.
  • Site monitoring and upkeep: Ensure content is updated, appropriate, relevant etc. Update homepage and help bring dynamic content to the forefront.
  • Site improvement: Collect and transfer technical improvements/feedback to WiserEarth technical team; create, distribute, and analyze research surveys to improve user experience
Required Skills and Experience:
  • 1-3 years experience as an online community manager at a publicly available site or project. 
  • Able to understand the mechanics of how online community programs and applications work enough to have ideas of your own
  • Enough technical knowledge to have productive conversations with technical staff in the service of making or improving our offering
  • Good social skills online and in person. Patience and strong interpersonal skills are a must
  • Strong, professional writing skills online and in the normal course of business.
  • A passion for and an understanding of how to leverage Web 2.0 tools for social change.
  • An interest in social justice and/or environmental sustainability is preferred
