We had such a great time on the Sustainable Living Roadshow National Eco Tour this past summer/fall! Spreading spores and fungal friendships around the world is what we enjoy. It was so nice getting to meet so many enthusiastic and inspired people out there. Please keep in touch. We've got a lot of work to do!
The Sporriors offer a number of services as representives of the Fungal Kingdom. We can host workshops on the basics of mushroom cultivation, remediation, identification, medication and fabric dyeing. We are also in the midst of setting up an ediable landscape company that will come and instal a mushroom patches in your yard.
Our group offers mycorestoration strategies and implementation in the
San Francisco Bay Area. Mycorestoration methods use fungi as
‘decomposers’ and bioaccumulators of toxic material to cleanse
commercial and residential landscapes. In particular, petroleum-laden
run-off from automobiles and industry can be degraded through the
introduction of pleurotus ostreatus, the oyster mushroom, which
actually secrete enzymes that denature petroleum’s long chain
hydrocarbon structure.
How?
Our group uses oyster mushroom spawn, which is the mycelium of the
fruiting mushroom body, and substrate, the medium on which the mycelium
will ‘run,’ to introduce the mushrooms to contaminated soil. Once the
mushrooms are able to colonize the soil in which contamination has
occurred soil remediation will begin as the petroleum is degraded.
Within six months soil vitality should return, improving the
environmental integrity of the remediation site.
When?
Since oyster mushroom mycelium is able to colonize substrate best in
both dappled sunlight and moist conditions, rainy, mild parts of the
year may be most suitable for outdoor installations. However, methods
of shading and irrigation can be utilized to promote year-round growth
of mycelium.
Why?
Toxic run-off affects soil and water quality throughout our
communities, from public parks to private homes and throughout
sensitive ecosystems in between. The more that we are able to
break-down or bioaccumulate toxic materials using nature’s toolbox, the
greater our chances of healing our planet and ourselves will become.
Mushroom remediation may be essential in home permaculture systems to
assure that food production areas stay clear of the toxic leach fields
around drive-ways, roads, and auto-storage areas. Installations at
learning centers such as schools and community gardens may also serve
to educate the public about our environment, empowering future
generations with solutions to the problems of pollution.
Who?
The Sporriors have experience in mushroom education across America. You
might be able to catch us giving workshops at local environmental
events as well. For more information or a quote on an installation,
call any one of the following mycelial nodes.
We offer consultation on edible mushrooms as well.
