– 1PIE Portal –

MINUTES FROM BREAKOUT SESSION

November 18, 2008

Participants were invited to share their experience and brainstorm about the portal –

“what are you passionate about and what would like to bring to this project?

What expertise do you have and what challenges do you see in building such a portal?

GOALS OF PORTAL:

  1. Uniform Use Experience
  2. Simple Web-based architecture
  3. Clear decision architecture
  4. Back end server architecture
  5. Database management
  6. catalogued, captured, retrievable

Input from participants:

We need to start a node – guiding principles – decided-upon rules of engagement –

Ultimately achieve a simple user experience -

All ideas can be mapped and shared – must have uniform and simple way that input can be offered and catalogued so it can be searchable and sharable.

Then be able to create working groups (chats, blogs, video rooms, virtual workspaces)

Once we’ve decided upon this, can go out to 2009 summit, then to delegates that are invited, create working groups around the world.

If you think about how to create collaboration frameworks – it is like building nodes of a big database.

We need a really simple interface for user voting system, collaboration framework for sharing ideas and creating working groups, then becomes standards group – to have an open transparent sustainable index for all sectors of the economy.

Problem: collaborators aren’t collaborating, sustainable indices aren’t necessarily transparent.

Sophie’s background: used to work at Sun Microsystems – responsible for Solaris and the multilingual versions of the Java open desktop  -7 years – was Program Manager working with architects, lead engineers, marketing people – has extensive experience running complex projects with local and virtual teams.

Sophie worked on the open desktop (with Gnome, Mozilla & Open Office foundation) and Pamela ran collaboration across 20 vertical industries in 60 countries and 163 products, etc. (?)

Need to write common language for collaboration –

James – web 3.0 changes architecture – many to many communications – so there are free tools for collaboration and group building – what needs to be built and what can we appropriate that’s already out there?

We also have Jenny Huang that leads the IFOSS (international Free and open software)– in the team but had a conflict with another conference. Another member is Scott Span, his expertise is with decision modeling – he has worked with CARE and other organizations.

If core is voting, then we need social media marketing – like YouTube – getting people involved.

Creating awareness around charity work and global healing – using media station or video cell phones – can update database constantly b/c there’s new material.

Other inputs:

  • need sustainable business model and revenue for the portal (so that can pay minimum staff to maintain it)
  • dotsub.com – free online translation tool

From Pamela:

  • USE EXPERIENCE
  • COLLABORATION BUILDING
  • DATA CAPTURE
  • DECISION ARCHITECTURE
  • TECHNOLOGY ARCHITECTURE

Scott Badenoch: There is a “Mashed-potato mountains” phenomenon happening – in the movie Close encounters of the 3rd kind – meaning many people are thinking and doing the same thing separately (portals).

Some available and appropriate online tools that could be used:

Xigi.net  – social capital marketplace

Slashdot.com

Smartocracy

Linkedin

Wiser earth.org

Other suggestions:

Offline think tank

Peer review

Peer-to-peer review  -- contextualized review

Data visualization

Incentives for participation

Media is the message -- Structure is what you’re telling people

Video tagging

Dynamic user-created content taxonomies

Online/offline youtubian reality

Cellphone based

(Greg Wendt) We have to use non-linear economics, non-linear math drives design

Linear is broadcast – one to many – like our current economic systems.

Interactive growth instead – biomimicry – about exchanging energy – replacing linear systems with non-linear systems.

Jeff – 1village foundation – what is the learning curve?

Jamie Alexander’s company Diaonovo.com – is based on open software Drupal, therefore members of the community could contribute widgets, applications – open source social change community – people can post ideas and people can comment – and ideas can grow in relation to interest.

Casey James – Green Society – greensociety.org – uses Drupal – it is a content management system.

WiserEarth.org – having a storehouse of information so groups can access it – wikis, etc.

Localization and internationalization issues – we need uniform user experience –

The issue – calpirg, netimpact, social investment forum – students, social services, investment professionals – so my info is searchable outside my group.

Int’l trade is English – but localized –

Drupal has needs board – they ask what the community needs, so that they can develop features that their users have asked.

Lorenzo Fallerano – with Better Energy Systems – charges cellphones – solio live – light, innovation, voice and energy – in India and Africa – bring energy, cell phones, and lighting to people all over the world – LED lighting system – Solio live – uses media on SIM cards with phones they give away – water, malaria, AIDS, give people information with the phone – educational and actionable information – get local market prices for their products – so they can avoid middlemen.

Elimination of duplication of interests –

What if people don’t have internet access? (Frontier) Frontline SMS – free txt messages – you can send 1000 txts – software that sends SMS from your desktop.

1pie can link up technologists, those in need, and funding –

Having one portal might not be feasible, but one language across all portals can be done–

There has to be a meta-network –

Chris Lindstrom – needs method for building networks together – to scale that infinitely into the future – constantly evolving – to come into holarchic shape – to define the protocol, the standard through which we communicate.

What about the Semantic Web?

Voting – transforming how money works with voting system and monetary system – how to align and see synergy in these systems – money is voting – it is the ultimate linear system – has created illusion –

Internet has been avenue to lead us into new system – Jean Francois Noubel – transitioner.org – collective intelligence –

What are  3-5 critical success factors –

1. we all want to stay connected and collaborate after the Summit –

Merlin – Blue Planet Village – vision – whole new world – from world of business – need a way to sustain ourselves – raising the funds to sustain all these organizations –

He pledged to give back 50% of the profits – with a public company – also create marketing system –

Jeff – what is 1pie.org ?–define it so it fulfills its mission –

  • Empowerment
  • Aggregation and syndication for feedback loops
  • User generated content – in video, blogs, photos, etc. – real-time capturing
  • Social media marketing – youtubes, facebook, etc.
  • Sustainable business model – affiliate programs, creative financing
  • Online collaboration forum for existing non-profits – provides framework
  • Localized version to allow people to use software
  • Open source platform – allows anyone to add and modify it – Drupal?
  • Have a network for us to collaborate right after this event? Use Ning or Wiserearth.org?

What do we need to succeed to go to the next step? What are the 3-5 bullets we can offer?

Further investigate:

Can system feed into pre-existing online activities? i.e., when you’re buying tickets to travel somewhere you get info about taking medicines, visiting non-profit projects, learning, connecting, etc. --?

How to look at digg.com and economist voting mechanisms – let’s vet all the current technologies that are out there – especially as they relate to global voting mechanisms –

Make sure design is efficient – because 1pie portal is resource for global sustainability movement – how to make sure it is secure?

We are distributed, we are tools, not a destination site. Can’t be shut-downable – bit-torrent server architecture.

Take institute for cultural affairs and make it into an online interface – get collaborators online and online folks collaborating:

  1. start group to discuss – wiserearth.org
  2. cataloguing and archiving comments and ideas for searchability
  3. plan for development future taxonomy and common vocabulary
  4. scalable for multicultural input and interaction
  5. super simple client interface – graphical and not language base
  6. create working group to explore available technologies, incl. voting technologies.

Do you know of other people that may want to join this team?

Have other people you want to join? Invite them, list them?

Hi Tal,

I updated the minutes to make it a little more clear by pasting changes made earlier in a Word document. However, there seem to be seem a section with html tags now at the beginning and I don't know how to remove it. Can you help? It doesn't look good! Thanks
