Philanthropy

Philanthropy is the act of giving money, goods, time, or effort to support a charitable cause, usually over an extended period of time and in regard to a defined objective. In a more fundamental sense, philanthropy may encompass any altruistic activity that is intended to promote good or improve human quality of life. Although philanthropy is associated with people and institutions of wealth, people may perform philanthropic acts without possessing great wealth. Any altruistic giving towards any kind of social need that is not served, underserved, or perceived as such by the market can be considered a philanthropic act. However philanthropy is most associated with foundations and trusts that act on behalf of wealthy persons, living or deceased. Corporations are creating a new, nontax-exempt branch of philanthropy called for-profit philanthropy. Along with individuals such as Jeff Skoll and Pierre Omidyar, it makes for-profit investments that are considered philanthropic because their purpose is social benefit instead of monetary profits.
