Pinnipeds
| Pinnipeds There are thirty-four species of seals, sea lions, and walruses. These pinnipeds are medium to large mammals that, as opposed to whales, must keep some connection to land for breeding. They are graceful and fully adapted to water with the majority of pinnipeds living in colder waters. Humans have utilized pinnipeds for meat, oil, ivory, and fur and competed with them for fish resources. They are most easily hunted when they return to land to give birth. Young seals, hunted for their pelts, have been a major focus of animal rights and conservation sectors of the environmental movement. |  |
