Infrastructure
All modern communities must move people along streets, bridges, and sometimes through tunnels and underground subways; many move freight by rail, ships, and airfields from central transport centers such as harbors and airports. Modern communities must be powered by electricity and usually natural gas and steam; they must be kept clean by water and wastewater treatment facilities as well as garbage (solid waste) disposal and reuse. And, all modern communities have mechanized modes of communication such as telephone by landlines, cell phones by airwaves as well as postal services. Each of these services requires many components configured and connected into a network. The sum total of all these working parts and the system itself is called "infrastructure." Infrastructure is considered by many to be the most important driving force in community economic development. Infrastructures shape housing and commercial density, green spaces, health, and sustainability of communities. In developing nations, roads, electricity, and water and wastewater infrastructures are the highest priorities.
