Organic farming is the practice of producing crops and livestock without the use of synthetic fertilizers, pesticides, and other chemicals, and is an approach to agriculture where the aim is to create integrated, humane, environmentally sustainable agricultural production systems. Organic farming systems rely on crop rotations, crop residues, animal manures, legumes, off-farm organic wastes, mechanical cultivation, and biological pest control to maintain soil productivity, to supply nutrients to plants, and to control weeds and pests.

would anyone be able to enlighten me to why organic and community farming is better than consumer farming like buying fruit and vegetables that have been sprayed with pesticides and herbicides?

Independent, third party certification of organic food systems has been the foundation of domestic and international organic food trade.

Our job at QAI is to verify that the organic integrity is maintained.

The QAI Certification Program is designed to certify every step of the organic chain:

From the land on which the product is grown; to the producers growing the product; to the post-harvest facilities preparing the product; to the processing and handling facilities transforming the product.

Post Harvest
Distributors
Private Label
Producers
Processors
Restaurants
Retailers

Since 1989, QAI's diligence, at every link in the organic production chain, continues to provide assurance that the actual product destined to enter into market distribution is indeed organic.

QAI is committed to the ongoing education of the organic community and consumers. For this reason, our experienced QAI staff members are often asked to present information on organic certification to various industry groups. We at QAI welcome the opportunity to collaborate with our clients through presentations or by providing published materials on organic issues. For more information please contact us by e-mail qai@qai-inc.com">qai@qai-inc.com, or contact us by phone at 858.792.3531.

I would like to suggest another area of focus be added within Agriculture...alongside organics and permaculture, which would be biodynamics. It is different to these even though similar. There are many Biodynamic organisations worldwide, which make it signficantly different to organic farming and gardening. PLease take alook at www.howtosavetheworld.co.nz which is a film of how Biodynamicss is being accepted in thousands of Indian villages. Iain (tros)

I am glad you were quick to point on that aspect - it is natureness; but can you say whether the picture is organic or inorganic? It is very important to define that one way or the other.

I don't see the advantage of adding color or adjusting formatting on this or any other Area of Focus portal. I really, really like the way Facebook has chosen to identify groups, people, events and everything else through a main image and fields for various kinds of information. I'm afraid that the custom content for this page distracts from the (I predict) most used content - the "Connections" box.
